Miller Manufacturing Company, a leading manufacturer of farm, ranch and pet products for over 70 years is searching for two Product Support Engineers for their Glencoe location. The Product Support Engineer is primarily responsible for the quality, performance, compliance and reliability of new and existing product. This includes continuous improvement of existing product design, the product manufacturing transition and support new product introduction into production to optimize total cost and provide reliable product performance in alignment with Miller?s requirements. This position will evaluate product to determine root cause to resolve customer complaints and perform new product testing to determine design integrity. This position supports both existing product and new product design with dotted line reporting to the New Products Manager.

The position requires a 4 year degree in Engineering from an accredited institution, three to five years of related experience and/or training, or the equivalent combination of education and experience in plastic and rubber materials/molding, sheet metal and wire fabrication, electronic circuitry, and packaging for global distribution. Also preferred: a clear understanding in the application or statistics, DOE and root cause analysis and knowledge of and be able to determine when to apply GD&T. Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, MS Project, Pro-E and AutoCAD, database, and ERP systems. The ability to multi-task, great organizational skills, professional communication, teamwork and efficient responsiveness are all a must.

Raymond J. Learsy: Alan Greenspan Tells It Like It Isn't

On October 23 , 2008 in Congressional testimony Alan Greenspan, as reported by the New York Times "a humbled Mr. Greenspan admitted that he had put too much faith in the self correcting power of free markets." This coming from someone who near ten years before, as Federal Reserve Chairmanof long standing, was one of the most forceful voices in Washington clamoring for the repeal of the Glass-Steagall Bank Act, the law which had clearly prohibited banking firms from gambling with their depositors money held directly or held in affiliated commercial banks. Yet seemingly, when all is said and done it seems, in this case, it becomes impossible to teach old dogs new tricks.

This past week (06.21.12) talking with Tom Keene on Bloomberg TV, Greenspan sprung to the aid of the Wall Street Mafia militating to emasculate the Dodd- Frank legislation by proclaiming loud and clear there is no need to return to the Glass -Steagall Bank Act and all it would imply in restricting the proprietary trading of banks. "Glass-Steagall was never a useful vehicle" Mr. Greenspan's words. The issue of proprietary trading, that is the risk prone casino gambling in such non-banking related position taking be they commodities such as oil, oil products, grains, base metals, etc., or uncovered financial instruments such as CDS' were swept into a homogenous category by Greenspan, that banks are structured to take risks. This, as though making loans to businesses, industry, municipalities, home owners, financing trade through letters of credit, were of the same construct than the rote commodity and financial instrument gambles undertaken by the likes of Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan Chase et al.

Citigroup, for one, well understood this distinction and their responsibility to the banking community, their shareholders and the economy at large after the financial disaster of September 2008 and thereafter divested themselves of their commodity trading division, Philipp Brothers, which at the time was among the largest oil traders in the world. This in sharp contrast to JPMorgan Chase, the biggest bank proponent of prop trading and the biggest adversary of the Volker Rule core to the Dodd-Frank legislation. JP MorganChase just before and after September 2008 expended billions to acquire the trading divisions of Royal Bank of Scotland's Sempra Commodities, the trading division of Bear Stearns, and making extensive investments in the gaming tables themselves by becoming the largest shareholder of the London Metal's Exchange.

JPMorgan's ambitious venture into prop trading, as has been reported extensively, was to have their huge unhedged (gambling) position in financial instruments blow up to a trading loss initially reported as a $2 billion wipe out, but now understood to be nearing $6 billion. Perhaps manageable for JPMorgan Chase, but such an extraordinary digression from traditional banking methodology has become, by example, and with the support of the likes of an Alan Greenspan springing to the aid of the Wall Street Brigade proclaiming there is no need to return to the Glass-Steagall Bank Act and by extension its Volcker Rule, placing our entire financial system at risk.

As an aside, the recent Congressional Hearings on JPMorgan's recent trading losses, might well have been far more enlightening if questions were also posed to Dimon about JPMorgan's proprietary trading in commodities such as crude oil, copper, and the like, and exactly what does that have to do with banking?

Oh, by the way, it has just been reported that Jamie Dimon will be getting a double digit raise this year on top of his tens of millions in 2011.

Prostate Cancer Screening Does Not Improve Mortality | ISMH

The Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian (PLCO) Cancer Screening Trial is a multi-center, randomized trial aimed at determining disease-specific mortality outcomes.? The goal relative to prostate cancer was to determine if a reduction in prostate cancer mortality would occur through screening via PSA and DRE.? A recent manuscript summary reported data 13 years in follow-up after the trial.

Nearly 77,000 men ages 55-74 years were randomly assigned to either screening via PSA screening for 6 years and DRE for 4 years versus usual care, which included ?opportunistic screening?.? At 13 years, 4250 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer in the screening group versus 3815 in the control group.? Cumulative data discovered a 12% increase in prostate cancer incidence in the screening group, yet mortality in the intervention and control groups were 3.7 and 3.4/10,000 person/years, respectively (relative risk = 1.09).? There was a non-statistically significant decrease in incidence of high-grade prostate cancer in the intervention screening group.

This data suggests that no mortality benefit was observed for routine screening for prostate cancer via PSA and DRE after 13 years of follow-up.? In contrast, the European Randomized Study for Prostate Cancer (ERSPC) trial published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2009 reported a 20% reduction in prostate cancer mortality after 10 years of follow-up in men ages 55-69.? However, in the PLCO trial, 45% of men had at least one PSA in the 3 years prior to randomization, while 52% of men had a PSA during the screening period; the rate of screening in the control group was approximately 50% that of the intervention group.? The authors state that they plan to update this data after 15 years of total follow-up.? Lastly, they suggest caution in determining efficacy of prostate cancer screening as their results demonstrate the effect of adding regular screening in addition to opportunistic screening , as to date, there is no evidence of benefit.

One of the problems, in my opinion, with academia and, as a result, academic culture as it has evolved, developed, devolved, choose your poison, is the division of the social sciences and the humanities into disciplinary territories with names like History, Anthropology, Sociology, Psychology, Economics, Folklore, English, and so on and on and on.

It is interesting to compare academic times present with intellectual times past. In the nineteenth century, before the development of academic disciplines and before social science and humanities fossilised or hardened into what they are today, the interdisiplinary and totalistic and wholisic intellectual life was actually treasured and rewarded. Some of those who engaged in the grand interdisiplinary and wholistic enterprise, in fact, became the totemistic godfathers of the biological sciences, Sociology, and Anthropology and remain very much so today. Charles Darwin, for instance, in his Origins of Species (1859) and Descent of Man (1871) pointed out that all species, including man, humans, were the products of the interaction between biology and environment. He called it adaptation. Karl Marx in his various writings, polemical and "scientific", explored the prehistory and history of human economic activity from hunter-gatherer societies through agricultural feudal societies to industrial capitalist societies. Max Weber explored in great detail and depth the question of why capitalism arose in the West by focusing on variety of factors that contributed to the development of modern capitalism in the West including Western Calvinism. Emile Durkheim analysed how societies made themselves into objects of their own transcendental desire and how modern societies differed from pre-modern societies

The development of academia into disciplines claiming special knowledge over a particular territory of human knowledge in the late 19th and early 20th century has been all for the bad, in my opinion, when it comes to understanding human life in all its shapes, forms, and sizes particularly when compared with the comparative interdisciplinarity of the 19th century. On the historical and sociological level the disciplining of academia is a reflection of the same specialisation of labour processes that have occurred in other sectors of the modern world thanks to such things as capitalism, industrialisation, centralisation, professionalisation, and bureaucratisation. On the sociology of knowledge level this specialisation has had a particularly deleterious effect because, if we really want to understand humankind in all of its historical and cultural forms, we have to look at humans through the broad lenses of biology, economics, culture, politics, and geography not through the narrowly focused nearsighted lenses of academic disciplines. We have to do this because, as Darwin recognised over a hundred years ago, human life is the product of both nature (biology, genetics, demography) and nurture (economics, culture, politics, and geography). For this reason dividing knowledge into little or not so little territorial boxes, as academia has done, does not help us understand human life and human culture in general. In fact it actually hinders us.

American Anthropology recognised this when it subdivided itself into Biological or Evolutionary Anthropology, Cultural or Social Anthropology, Linguistics, and Archaeology. What sounds great in theory has not proved as wonderful in practise, however. The various strands of academic Anthropology, like academia in general, have developed their own specialised knowledges, their own bureaucratic practises, and their own distinct languages making discourse between all four branches difficult if not impossible and not always desirable to increasingly distinct Bioanthropologists, Ethnographers and Ethnologists, Linguists, and Anthropological Archaeologists. Moreover, American Anthropology as practised has long had another problem. Cultural and Social Anthropology has tended to focus on non-modern societies and cultures leaving the moderns to Sociology, Anthropological Archaeology has nothing to do with Ancient and Classical Archaeology. So even the one discipline that attempted in theory to be wholistic and which made sacred the collection of materials from around the world on every hunter-gatherer, pastoral, agricultural, water based societies and cultures for their Human Relations Area Files, hasn't really been engaged in this necessary and essential interdisciplinary and comparative work in practise. And while this may be partly due to increasing human complexity and the increasing size of the Western world in particular it also has something, a large something in my opinion, to do with Western specialisation, centralisation, professionalisation, and bureaucratisation.

I regard this little fable about the failures of wholistic Anthropology, by the way, as the proverbial canary in the coal mine waring us that the notion that all disciplines working together will produce a general understanding of and knowledge of the world we live in in all its glory is an illusion if not a hallucination. Specialisation generally leads to the development of separate (but not equal) academic disciplines and "distinct" academic knowledges, academic knowledge specialisation (the higher education bureaucracy's version of the division of labour), and languages, academic little boxes, not interdisciplinary interaction or a broad understanding of the world and the humans who live in that world.

Thankfully interdisciplinary and comparative explorations of human life and human culture in all their complexity is not yet dead as the writings of Jurgen Habermas, Anthony Giddens, Pierre Bourdieu, and others show. Such interdisciplinary attempts to get at humans, human society, and human culture are, however, anomalies in an academic disciplinary context that rewards specialisation rather than interdisciplinarity and which penalises unorthodoxy and heresy. And that, dear unreaders, is a tragedy of immense dimensions and is why I am no longer sure academia really works or functions as much more than an bureaucracy for the accumulation of social capital, cultural capital, and economic capital by some.
