Sports Authority says CEO's resignation was "personal" decision

David Campisi resigned less than a week after Sports Authority signed an agreement to put its name on the Denver Broncos' stadium.

Englewood-based Sports Authority said Tuesday that the resignation of chief executive David Campisi was a personal decision, though it did not elaborate on what prompted the move.

The announcement of Campisi's resignation Monday caught many outside the company by surprise, particularly because it came less than a week after Sports Authority signed a deal to put its name on the Denver Broncos' stadium.

"Mr. Campisi's decision to resign was a personal one," the sporting-goods retailer said in a statement. It "had nothing to do with Sports Authority's relationship with the Denver Broncos or its decision to assume the stadium naming rights."

The company has declined requests to comment further. Attempts to reach Campisi for comment have been unsuccessful.

In its statement, Sports Authority thanked Campisi for his service and said it looked forward to Darrell Webb's assuming the role of president and CEO of the company. Sports Authority said Monday that Webb had been appointed interim president and CEO.

Webb was most recently chairman and CEO of Jo-Ann stores, a retail chain owned by private-equity firm Leonard Green & Partners LP, which also owns Sports Authority.

Sports Authority said it looks forward to a continued partnership with the Broncos and the Metropolitan Football Stadium District.

The stadium district on Aug. 16 voted to change the name of Invesco Field at Mile High to Sports Authority Field at Mile High. The naming-rights deal with Sports Authority is for nine years; the company is negotiating an extension to 2035.
