Jackson to make 'The Hobbit' into a trilogy

BURBANK, Calif. (AP) ? Peter Jackson is adding a third film to what was planned to be the two-part series "The Hobbit."

The director of the Oscar-winning "The Lord of the Rings" movies said Monday that after viewing a cut of the first film and part of the second that there was room for a third.

Jackson says in a statement that a lot of J.R.R. Tolkien's tale of Bilbo Baggins would remain untold if a third film wasn't made. The films are set in the fictional world of Middle-earth 60 years before "The Lord of the Rings."

"We recognized that the richness of the story of 'The Hobbit,' as well as some of the related material in the appendices of 'The Lord of the Rings,' gave rise to a simple question: do we tell more of the tale?" Jackson said in a statement. "And the answer from our perspective as filmmakers and fans was an unreserved 'yes.' "

"We know how much of the tale of Bilbo Baggins, the Dwarves of Erebor, the rise of the Necromancer, and the Battle of Dol Guldur would remain untold if we did not fully realize this complex and wonderful adventure," he said.

Warner Bros. and MGM will continue their partnership to make the trilogy.

The first film, "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," hits theaters Dec. 14, while the second, "The Hobbit: There and Back Again" is set for release on Dec. 13, 2013.

The third film will come out in the summer of 2014.

All three movies are being shot in digital 3-D in New Zealand, which is home to Jackson's Weta Digital special effects house. Principal photography recently finished on the first two films.

Jackson, his wife Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens and Guillermo del Toro are listed as co-writers of the first two films.

Mutant Roadkill review - when Temple Run goes post-apocalyptic

Mutant Roadkill review - when Temple Run goes post-apocalyptic

Mutant Roadkill screeched into Google Play earlier this month as an unabashed homage to Temple Run with a few significant twists. Instead of being chased, you're the one chasing, and you're running over radioactive zombies in a gritty post-apocalyptic world.

Players mount up in a car and steer by tilting the device to the left or right in order to dodge debris littering the streets and nail shambling mutants. Some will be a bit more aggressive, and require players to scrape them off the side of their car by skimming walls, or rely on the odd power-up to clear the way. Players earn cash based on how long they survive without crashing, how many mutants they hit (earning bonus points for consecutive kills), and how many challenges they manage to complete. That coin can be used to buy new vehicles, improve power-ups, and purchase consumables. A premium currency can be bought through IAPs in order to access the particularly good stuff.

Planning for Important End of Life Health Care Decisions ...

Do you have the necessary legal documents and advance directives in place for end of life care and medical emergencies?

By Bob DeMarco
Alzheimer's Reading Room
Lately I have been receiving more and more questions about Advance directives and legal documents for end of life care.

Shortly after I came to Delray Beach to take care of Dotty I had all of the necessary documents executed, signed, and notarized.

This included legal documents like a durable power of attorney, designation of health care surrogate, Do Not Resuscitate (DNR), and living will.

Subscribe to the Alzheimer's Reading Room

You can take several approaches to these documents. For example, you can hire an attorney to do them for you. Or, you can do what I did, go out on the Internet find what you need, get them completed and executed.

Here is a list of the some of the documents you need, or might need.

  • Durable Power of Attorney for Finances gives someone called a trustee the power to make legal and financial decisions for the person with Alzheimer's dementia.
  • Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care gives someone called a proxy the power to make health care decisions for the person with Alzheimer's dementia.
  • Living Will states the person?s wishes for health care at the end of life.
  • Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) this form tells health care staff how the person wants end-of-life health care managed.
  • Will tells how the person wants his or her property and money to be divided among those left behind.
  • Living Trust tells someone called a trustee how to distribute a person?s property and money

You can contact your State Attorney Generals' Office to obtain help and advice.

Thanks to the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization and Caring Connections you can get all or most of the documents you need on one website.

Importantly, the documents are tailor made for each state.

Download Your State's Advance Directives

You should have all of these documents executed and available long before you need them.

Carole Larkin had a very good suggestion. Put a copy in the glove compartment of your car just in case you need them in an emergency situation.

Why You'll need An Enterprise Entity | The Groveland Buzz

When starting or expanding a company, a lot of owners wonder if they should really type a business entity and, if so, which one they need to use. There is a wide range of information and facts and ?pitches? being made online relating to the rewards of specific entities versus other people. Any time you cut via the flak, nonetheless, the main reason for forming a company entity would be to generate protection from private liability arising from your company activities.

It truly is well established that up to eighty percent of companies will fail in their very first two years. Several of these firms, and possibly yours, carry a high degree of private threat for their owners. Should you usually are not making use of the correct entity for the particular business, you will be personally liable if the company fails. Do you need to expose your home, vehicle and also other assets? How concerning the assets owned by your spouse or their paycheck from a standard job? Choosing the appropriate entity for the company prevents such nightmares from occurring. Far more importantly, you can sleep at night recognizing that the worst point that can occur is losing your investment inside the business, not your property.

Business Structures

You can find several business enterprise structure options that exist within the modern corporate world. Following is really a short explanation on the most popular business enterprise structures.

Corporations

Corporations are available in two standard forms, a ?C? corporation and an ?S? corporation. You can find a range of differences, but the central a single is actually a tax situation. Briefly place, ?C? corporations are taxed on their revenues and that you are then taxed separately on any dollars you take out from the corporation. An ?S? corporation passes through all taxes towards the shareholders using the information getting reported on your private tax returns.

Regardless of the tax classification, a corporation is deemed an independent entity from a legal standpoint. This independent status acts as a shield amongst the activities of the business as well as your private assets. As a practical example, Kmart lately filed bankruptcy. The person shareholders were not needed to file bankruptcy and lost absolutely nothing much more than their investment inside the stock in the corporation. Forming and utilizing a corporation for the business enterprise activities will have the identical effect, to wit, your private assets will not be wiped out if the business enterprise fails.

Limited Liability Business

A limited liability organization, or ?LLC? because it is better known, was a very well-known entity alternative inside the early 1990s. LLCs are comparable to corporations, but could be taxed as a partnership. In California, the LLC can have either one particular owner or two. Regardless of the number, these owners carry the legal title of ?member. The LLC supplies a shield for your personal assets just like a corporation.

Partnerships

In my opinion, it is actually improved to possess died a small youngster then be within a partnership. However, numerous small business owners type partnerships and don?t even know it. This occurs once they go into business enterprise with a different person. If no business enterprise entity is formed, the law considers the enterprise to be a partnership and treats it accordingly.

Partnerships are dangerous for one particular primary reason: a partnership will not provide any protection from liability and, in numerous ways, invites private liability. Beneath well-established law, most partnerships are classified as ?general?. This basically indicates that all of the partners are contributing for the administration and running with the partnership company. This classification can have grisly outcomes.

In a general partnership, each partner is jointly liable for the debts of any other partner arising from the business enterprise. As an example, you and your partner go to an organization dinner with a client. Your partner has a drink and after that a number of additional. They then get into an accident on the way home. Each in the partners is liable for the damages claimed by the injured men and women. That signifies YOU! Even if you had been not within the auto, did not rent the automobile, never ever saw the car or truck and do not drink!

Partnerships are a recipe for disaster. Remain away from them whenever feasible.

Limited Partnerships

Limited Partnerships ["LP"] are perhaps the most misunderstood business enterprise entity. A limited partnership is equivalent to a general partnership, but will allow a number of the partners to limit their liability by being limited partners. It is important to note that these limited partners are restricted to basically creating a capital [cash, content, equipment] contribution to the partnership. They can?t be involved in actively running the company. If they?re, they shed any protection from partnership debts. Numerous limited partnerships end disastrously. When you are married to the notion of pursuing a restricted partnership, you need to do so in mixture with corporations. That specific approach is well beyond the scope of this short article, but feel totally free to contact me in case you wish to pursue a limited partnership.

Business enterprise owners ought to defend themselves by forming entities for their business enterprise activities. The true issue is identifying the structure that is very best for the distinct situation.

Rural fighters pour into Syria's Aleppo for battle

ALEPPO, Syria (Reuters) - The route to Aleppo from the Turkish border is a long web of dirt back roads with miles of exposed ground. But undaunted and in total darkness, dozens of young men jump onto white trucks with their AK-47 rifles, keen to join the fight there.

Syria's 16-month revolt has finally erupted in the country's commercial hub, but the momentum was not generated inside the city - it was brought into the historic city's ancient stone alleyways from the scorched fields of the surrounding countryside.

"We liberated the rural parts of this province. We waited and waited for Aleppo to rise, and it didn't. We couldn't rely on them to do it for themselves so we had to bring the revolution to them," said a rebel commander in a nearby village, who calls himself Abu Hashish.

The short scrawny man with a drooping grey moustache sits juggling cell phones and a walkie-talkie, arranging for the next convoy to head for Aleppo. Tanks of fuel and homemade grenades for use in rocket launchers are piled up along the outside of his house, ready to be dispatched.

"About 80 percent of the fighters in this city come from the countryside. Aleppo is a business town, people said they wanted to stay neutral. But now that we have come, they seem to be accepting us," he said.

As towns across Syria were rocked by the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad - in which it is estimated 18,000 people have been killed - Aleppo, home to conservative Muslim families and businesses, stayed largely silent.

Although armed resistance began in poorer districts where residents had more tribal allegiances or rural backgrounds, Aleppo's sacrifices have paled in comparison to nearby northern Idlib, central Homs or even Damascus, the capital.

Exasperated by the slow progress in Aleppo, rebels in the countryside said they were finally emboldened to push into the city after an assassination in the capital Damascus of four top government officials, including the defense minister.

"It was a boost to our spirits. We were so excited because we knew it was time. Aleppo is the economic center, the true source of regime power. If we can strike it hard, and hold on, we can bring Bashar down," said one rebel fighter joining the convoy who called himself Abu Bakr.

As they arrived in Aleppo before dawn, the fighters sped through the winding alleyways of the city's outskirts shouting: "God is great". And then the morning skirmishes began.

The rattle of rebel machinegun fire greeted the thuds of army tank fire, artillery could be heard in the distance, and an air force fighter jet streaked overhead.

SCHOOL PARTY

The streets of rebel-held neighborhoods are a graveyard of overturned, torched buses, specially placed along the streets by rebels to block army tanks from rolling in. The charred remains of tanks can also be seen - in heaps - by palm trees lining main thoroughfares.

"So far things here are going well for us. We have been used to fighting in olive groves and open fields. We were always exposed," said Hakour, a 23-year-old with a straggly beard wearing camouflage fatigues.

Lounging inside a school taken over by the rebels as a temporary base, he said: "It's much nicer to fight here where we can hide in alleyways and buildings. We will stay until Aleppo is free."

Toting grenade launchers, the fighters are incongruous alongside the school's pastel-colored walls. Every rebel unit that has passed through here has left a message in graffiti. "The Farouq Brigade was here", "The Muthanna Brigade will topple Bashar", "God is with those who will triumph".

One rebel plays on an electric keyboard that he found in the school music room. Other men play table tennis in the main hallway. Nearby, fighters sleep along the walls, curled up next to their guns and grenades.

"It took us months and months to liberate the countryside. But here things are moving quickly. We have even set up a security team with a hotline if residents want us to help them," Hakour says.

The rebels drink fizzy soft drinks as they sing and make jokes. But their jubilation is premature. A few minutes later a loud blast shakes the school and the rebels scatter to grab their weapons and head to the basement - a reminder of the army's determination to crush the uprising.

As another ripple of mortar fire echoes nearby, the men decide that they should switch bases.

"LET THEM DESTROY US"

"We had to start the battle to encourage Aleppo and get the residents accustomed to being part of the uprising. A lot of families have given the fighters money secretly, but they didn't want to do more. And there are even people unfortunately who still support the regime," said a fighter named Jumaa.

"I think for Aleppo the memories of the 1980s are still very deep," Jumaa said, referring to an Islamist uprising which was crushed by Assad's late father, whose forces killed at least 10,000 people in the central city of Hama.

The rebel-held area of Aleppo visited by a Reuters reporter appeared to be completely deserted by residents. Fighters were using houses as bases to sleep in.

Just 20 km (12 miles) outside Aleppo, rebels have declared most of the countryside free of Assad's forces. In the villages men gather to smoke and chat at night, while women wrapped in colorful veils let their children run onto the rubble-strewn streets to cheer at smiling gunmen.

"God protect the Free Syrian Army," they shouted.

Despite the tentative calm their home towns now enjoy, there is a hint of resentment towards Aleppo's residents from rural fighters gathered on the city's streets.

"My brother was shot dead just last month," says 22-year-old fighter Mustafa. He points out other faces in the crowd of rebel fighters. "His cousin died six months ago. Soldiers poured gasoline on him and set him on fire," Mustafa says.

Pointing to another group, he says: "Their families have fled and they haven't seen them in a year."

Outside the city, rebel commander Abu Hashish says more sacrifices are necessary, and that the time has come for his urban brothers to share the burden.

"In Aleppo they only think about trade, about money. They think about their own life, they think about their children's future. They don't fight the regime because they care about the here and now," he said.

"In the countryside we know we must give up on the present. I will sacrifice my life and my children's lives. Let them destroy our homes. This fight is for a new generation coming that will have a chance to have a life of dignity. And for me, that is worth sacrificing everything."

AT&T's Eco-rating makes in-store debut alongside Pantech Renue

AT&T's Eco-rating makes in-store debut alongside Pantech Renue

In February, at Mobile World Congress, AT&T announced a new program that would rate its various devices on their environmental-friendliness. Now that system is finally getting its in-store debut alongside the impressively green Pantech Renue. The Eco-ratings, which grade devices based on their use of recycled materials and toxic metals such as mercury and lead will give those more concerned with protecting the Earth than having the latest and greatest tech an easy way to determine the device that's right for them. Pantech for its part hopes the Renue, with its 67-percent recycled components and Energy Star-compliant charger will draw at least a few interested parties who wander in to AT&Ts shops. The rugged messaging device doesn't rock Jelly Bean, or any other smartphone OS for that matter, but it does have a slide out QWERTY keyboard for SMS addicts. Check out the video and PR after the break for more details.

www.miamiherald.com:

The tradition has been transplanted by Cubans to Miami-Dade County' neighborhoods like Kendall and Hialeah. Lopez, 40, estimates there are about 300 members of the local Club de Palomos Ladrones, which organizes competitions and crowns the most successful gigolo pigeons -- or rather, their owners -- with trophies and prize money.

The unmanned, school bus-size H-2 Transfer Vehicle-3 (HTV-3), also called Kounotori 3 ("White Stork" in Japanese), flew to about 40 feet (12 meters)?away from the ISS, where it was grabbed at 8:23 a.m. ET (1223 GMT) by the space station's 58-foot long (18 m) robotic arm, which was controlled from inside by astronauts Joe Acaba of NASA and Aki Hoshide of JAXA (the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency).

Using the Canadarm2 robotic arm, Acaba and Hoshide maneuvered Kounotori 3 to the Earth-facing docking port on the space station's Harmony node at 10:34 a.m. ET (1434 GMT).

"I think we couldn?t have had a better day and we're looking forward to a great HTV mission," Capcom Cady Coleman told the astronauts from Mission Control in Houston.

"You guys were great, thanks a lot for helping us out," Acaba replied. "Thanks a lot for all the food."

Today's arrival follows the?failed docking attempt?on Monday (July 23) of an unmanned Russian Progress spacecraft. The Progress 47 craft was testing a new rendezvous system, which apparently failed to work as planned. The vehicle, which had already been at the space station, had undocked in order to test the new system in a re-docking. Russia plans to try again on Sunday (July 29) to dock the Progress 47.

Kounotori launched?atop a Japanese H-2B rocket from the Tanegashima Space Center in southern Japan on July 20. The vehicle, which is 33 feet (10 m) long and 13 feet (4 m) wide, is also carrying a camera called the ISERV (International Space Station SERVIR Environmental Research and Visualization System).

The camera is to be installed on the station, for use by ground-based scientists who can manipulate it via remote control. The system is intended for studies of natural disaster sites and environmental issues on Earth.

The story of the world's first free-range computer virus

8 hrs.

How two Pakistani brothers and one piece of runaway code created the anti-virus industry.

It was early 1987, and security expert Roger Thompson had just seen his first computer virus, in a programming class at a technical college in Brisbane, Australia. "Back in those days, there really weren't any programs you could use to look for these things," recalls Thompson, who now works for anti-virus company AVG. "Somebody just handed me a disk." On the boot sector of the disk, there was a program called Brain.

"I took a look at the computer to see where it had written itself, and it wasn't anywhere on the hard drive. I thought, 'Oh, it's not a virus at all.' So I just moved on and put another disk in. Suddenly the virus was on the second disk. It was seeding every floppy I put in."

Prank programs had been around as long as there were computers to run them on, but truly self-replicating code hadn't been seen outside of university computer labs. The code was hovering in working memory, copying itself onto the boot sector of every disk that entered the machine. The program was non-destructive, but virulent ? and because those 5 1/4-inch disks were the only way to move data onto or off of a computer, Brain was able to span half the globe by the time it arrived in Brisbane.

Once Thompson isolated the code, he found an even bigger surprise. The creators' names were written into every copy: Basit & Amjad Alvi of Brain Computer Services, Lahore, Pakistan.

By the end of the year, Brain had spread through America and most of Europe, hopping from disk to disk, computer to computer. To leap across the ocean ? to reach Roger Thompson in Brisbane, say ? someone had to take an infected floppy onto a plane or ship. This was before the web: It was a lot harder to cross the ocean. And as the virus spread, so did the rumors: Was this some kind of revenge against software pirates? Were the brothers trying to kick off an IT security firm?

The truth is less dramatic. As Amjad describes it to BuzzFeed, he and his brother were just playing around with assembly language: "At the time, there were not multi-tasking OSs or multi-tasking programs, so we found some interesting code that stayed resident in the background of the memory." It was a powerful trick. "For more than a year, we were experimenting, just learning things. It was not planned that we were going to make a virus."

Patient zero was a hospital in the provincial capital of Quetta, 600 miles west of Lahore. In the fall of 1986, the Alvi brothers visited the hospital to install some software they'd developed. On the way, Amjad realized one of his disks was infected with the self-replicating program they'd been experimenting with. He decided to leave it there. "If someone wanted to steal my program, I figured I would know that program was stolen from that specific, isolated medical computer," he says. Having left it on a business computer in rural Pakistan, there was no reason to think the program would spread.

It took two years for Amjad to get his first call. Thanks to the time difference, it came in the middle of the night, from a student reporter at Miami University. She had found his number on a floppy disk.

There had been computer viruses in labs before, most notably Fred Cohen's experiements at USC in the early 1980s, but as long as the programs were confined to a lab, it was impossible to know how quickly or thoroughly they might spread. Simply releasing a program into the wild was impossible, due to ethics concerns, so it took a minor pandemic like Brain to make the IT world take notice. As Thompson puts it, "Nobody actually believed viruses existed until they got one, and then they became a believer right away."

Within a year of Brain's release, John McAfee and Eugene Kaspersky had both set up shop selling virus protection software. Shortly after, F-Secure in Finland, F-Prot in Iceland and Doctor Solomon's Antivirus in England followed suit, along with Thompson's own Leprechaun Software. Suddenly, anyone with a digital infrastructure was aware of the risk posed by viruses, and willing to pay money to protect themselves. A new industry sprang up in the space of a few years.

The Alvi brothers, for the most part, were left out. The western anti-virus businesses had little interest in cornering the Pakistani market, and in the years it took Brain to spread, Basit and Amjad moved on to other interests. Brain Inc. is a telecom company now. In 1998, they installed Pakistan's first high-speed fiber network. Even with the rise of militarized malware like Flame, Mr. Alvi hasn't seen much reason to get back into the anti-virus business. "If there can be a physical assault there can be a cyber assault as well," he told us. "It is not any different in my opinion." And for an honest man, coding viruses isn't much of a business opportunity.

Home Protector-Kitchen Extractor Fans - IdeaMarketers.com

The modern day kitchen has become a very big and wide place for not only cooking and keeping the edibles in shelves and fridge, but also to have the meals together. This means the kitchen has to be odour free of the smell of oil, fumes, spices and smoke. Here comes the acute requirement of the kitchen extractor fan. Most of the kitchens make do with the simple axial kitchen extractor fans that are being mounted on the hole in the wall that works as the ventilation tunnel for the extractor fan kitchen has. However, precise equipment is always required for the job that should have an extra edge to it, to meet all the requirements with precision. The solution to this dainty need is the kitchen hood exhaust fan which is in use at most of the kitchens.

If one considers the large variety of availability of the kitchen extractor fans it will create a big dilemma for the person on what to choose and what not to choose for the house. The extractor fan you choose should work in accordance with the requirement you have, as well as it should make your kitchen look good. This type of kitchen extractor fancomes in many categories such as Glass canopy hoods, Black cooker hoods, Stainless steel hoods, Island range hoods and more. The exhaust fans in the kitchen not only ventilate the area and purify the kitchen's air, but they also work as protectors to your home as well.

While you cook, there is more than a delicacy coming up off the burner. It's not only the fumes but also the smoke, oil vapors, steam and a lot of other residues in the atmosphere of the kitchen. These residues, mostly oil vapors gather up on the ceiling of the kitchen and form an oily layer which after sometime becomes very thick. This vapor could also form layers of oil on your furniture and other articles throughout the whole house. This results in a fast decay and somewhat damages the furniture and the other articles in the house. Moreover, the house is at a huge risk to catch fire for it has got a lot of inflammable residues stuck to it with time, from the oil vapours that were released while cooking. The extractor fan kitchen would save you from this trouble in the long run, while an array of kitchen extractor fans would give you a good option to choose from, the best kitchen extractor fan would be the one that fits excellently to your kitchen as well as to your pocket. Do a little browsing and you will find several online stores offering these models, so go for the purchase and make your home complete.

The Secret to Success and Joy is to do it scared | Belvidere Daily ...

Written by Kelly Epperson

I started on my path to joy in May 2001 when I submitted a few personal essays to my local paper. My weekly column is now in all kinds of papers in all kinds of places.

That step of putting myself out there has led to where I am now. Believe me, I was chicken. I emailed my writings at midnight when the world was asleep and no one knew what I was up to. Oh, the fears we harbor.

Fear of failure. Fear of success. Fear of embarrassment. Fear of what others think.

I?ve come so far in my journey since then. My writing led to becoming a speaker. The first time, I was scared speechless. Literally. My first speaking gig was a train wreck, and yet now I speak in front of hundreds to great response and absolutely love it.

Taking these steps, and doing it scared, has taught me so much. We never really ?get over? our fears. We simply learn to keep moving through them.

Every step I?ve taken with my business has evidenced that. In addition to writing and speaking, I?m now a life and business coach. I work with women who want to learn how to tap into their joy and take their lives to the next level.

I had tons of great content to share, yet when I first offered my online life mastery program, I was scared that no one would sign up. I did it scared, and sign up they did.

I?ve done it several times now and the results clients report cause me tears of joy. If I had held myself back because I was too chicken, I would not be feeling the joy of helping these women see their own beauty and letting their lights shine in the world.

As I face new opportunities, fears still pop up. Now I have the tools and confidence that I can try new things and the earth is not going to open up and swallow me. If I fail or if I succeed or I get embarrassed or if someone thinks I?m wacky, the world keeps spinning. We don?t fall off. We just keep learning and growing.

Now I know the secret to my success is to do it scared. I still get nervous doing radio or television, but I move through the fear. I get a little better every time.

It?s a little like writing a book. I have three of my own, and have written seventeen books for others. Yet in the middle of each project, I get overwhelmed and the task seems daunting.

I?ve figured out that my fear is not that I won?t finish the book. It?s the fear of the finished product and putting it out there. I am by far my own worst critic. So I remind myself that every single client has loved their end result. One book I wrote sold 3 million copies.

You would think I?d be over my fears, but they still show up from time to time. I think it?s human nature.

Realizing that we are not alone in these fears takes some of the bite out. When you are able to act even when feeling like a scaredy cat, that?s when you are able to break through. The path entices you to another step forward. Step by step, scared or not, leads to amazing joy. I?m living proof. My clients are living proof.

Whatever it is that you are holding yourself back from, take a step. Don?t chide yourself for feeling afraid. Simply do it scared. The world won?t swallow you. I promise.

Barclays employees boost Romney campaign

LONDON (AP) ? The former chief executive of Barclays dropped out of Mitt Romney's Thursday night fundraiser in London, but Bob Diamond had already sent a check for $2,500.

So have 82 others who listed their employer as Barclays or Barclays Capital on U.S. Federal Election Commission records, including two who gave the maximum to the Romney campaign, both in 2011 and 2012. One person gave the maximum to Barack Obama.

The role of Barclays bankers as significant contributors to Romney's campaign has drawn attention since Barclays became the first bank to admit that employees were involved in manipulating a key market index, the London interbank offered rate (LIBOR), a scandal which cost Diamond his job.

Electrical Contractors for Home Improvement Projects

While some people live in newer homes that boast the latest floor plan designs, lighting fixtures, appliances and more, many other people live in homes that are older in age. Older homes may have a certain character and charm that newer homes often lack, but they do have their downsides. As a home ages, its floor plan can become outdated and not suitable for the functional use of a family. The fixtures in a home can further date the home. If you are looking around your home today and want to make some changes to modernize the look of your space, you many need the services of electrical contractors.

Updated Lighting Beyond the flooring, paint color on the walls and the furniture inside a home, there are few things that make a home look old-fashioned and dated more easily than the lighting. Light fixtures are often installed when a home is built, and they often are not replaced for many years or even decades. What was fashionable ten or twenty years ago is simply not fashionable today. With this in mind, you can use the services of electrical contractors to replace the light fixtures throughout your home. Consider using these services for replacing outdoor lighting, that large chandelier in the foyer, ceiling fans in the bedrooms and light fixtures throughout the home. New lights can be added where there are none, and fixtures can also be removed if you find their presence pointless.

Room Additions and Expansions If your home improvement and remodeling efforts are more expansive in scope, you can use electrical services from a licensed contractor for room additions and expansions. Many existing walls contain wiring for electrical outlets, lighting, appliances and more. When you move a wall for expansion or addition purposes, these wires will need to be moved. Further, new wiring will need to be installed in the new space. An electrician contractor can provide you with assistance in these efforts.

Added Functionality If you are like most people, you use electricity for everything from vacuuming the floor and making coffee in the morning to watching TV and working on your computer. You require electrical outlets, lighting and more in every room of your home. Of course, the outlets and fixtures that were installed years ago may not be suitable for your current needs. An electrician can be called to your home for minor projects, such as adding a new outlet so that you don't need an extension cord. An electrician's services can also be used to move appliances to a new area of the home, to add overhead lighting in rooms where you currently only have floor lamps or other purposes. An older home can lack the function that a modern lifestyle demands, but electrician services can correct those issues in your home.

You may call an electrical professional to your home today for minor needs, or you may create a list of "to do" items for a contractor to assist you with during one specific visit.

Mr. Electric 2446 Bank Street #629 Ottawa, ON K1V 1A8?, provides professional and highly experienced electricians to solve any electrical problems. http://ottawa.mrelectric.com

17-year-old girl builds artificial ?brain? to detect breast cancer

5 hrs.

An artificial ?brain? built by a 17-year-old whiz kid from Florida is able to accurately assess tissue samples for signs of breast cancer, providing more confidence to a minimally invasive procedure.

The cloud-based neural network took top prize in this year?s Google Science Fair.?

?I taught the computer how to diagnose breast cancer,? Brittany Wegner, the Lakewood Ranch resident, told me today.

?And this is really important because currently the least invasive form of biopsy is actually the least conclusive, so a lot of doctors can?t use them.?

Wegner wanted to create a way for more doctors to use the minimally invasive procedure, called Fine Needle Aspirate, in order to ease the process of having lumps examined.

Breast cancer affects one in eight women worldwide, she noted, including members of her family.

?Early detection is really important,? Wegner said. ?And that is what I?m trying to do with my neural network.?

Artificial neural networks are essentially computer programs coded to think like the brain, she explained. Only they can detect patterns that are too complex for mere humans.?

And they get better as they process more and more data.

Wegner started building these networks in the seventh grade after studying the future of technology for a school project.?

?I came across artificial intelligence and was just enthralled. I went home the next day and bought a programming book and decided that was what I was going to teach myself to do,? she said.

Her first neural network played soccer.

For her Google Science Fair project, she built a neural network with Java and then deployed it to the?cloud. She ran 7.6 million trials on it and found it is 99.1 percent sensitive to malignancy.

?As I get more data, the success rate will go up and the inconclusive rate will go down,? she said. ?So with more data, I think it is hospital ready.?

She also?compared her custom-built network to three off-the-shelf products that she tweaked to work with her dataset. Her sensitivity to malignancy was 4.97 percent better than the commercial networks.

Now that her network is built and shown to get smarter with experience, Wegner aims to deploy it in hospitals. She also wants to extend it to other types of cancer.

?It will require a little bit of coding and tweaking, but it would be very easy to adapt it so it could diagnose other types of cancer and potentially other medical problems,? she said.

Before she gets cracking, though, Wegner deserves to bask in the glory of victory. The grand prize comes with $50,000 in scholarship money, an internship with a fair sponsor and a 10-day trip to the Galapagos Islands.

?I?ve never been to South America,? she said. ?I?m so excited.?

To learn more about Wegner?s project and the other finalists, check out the Google Science Fair.

Active Endpoints Releases New Wizard For Making Mobile Apps That Respond To Voice and Touch

cloudextendThe next generation of application development is starting to emerge. Frameworks act as a?catalyst for building applications. Platform as a Service (PaaS) is helping accelerate application development as it abstracts the stack that ?a developer usually has to build themselves to push out apps. With integrated systems, the idea of application assembly is emerging with solutions such as IBM's PureApplication System. Active Endpoints?symbolizes this trend with Cloud Extend Mobile, a platform with a wizard like "mind map" framework that is used to build and deploy mobile apps that respond to voice and touch.
